The Health Innovation Pathway is a new process designed to bring promising innovations into the health system faster – improving patient outcomes, driving economic growth and helping Ontario’s health system reach its full potential.

Before submitting your technology proposal, please review the eligibility criteria.
 

Technologies in scope for this process include: 

• medical devices 

• digital health technologies 

• digital health technologies regulated as a software as a medical device  

• digital health technologies that are intended to directly treat patients or diagnose a condition, or guide care decisions  

• medical and surgical procedures 

• medical imaging and screening programs 

• lab testing and genetic testing 

• complex health system interventions, such as models of health care delivery 

If applicable, technologies must have received Health Canada regulatory approvals demonstrating safety and/or risk mitigation.  

For technologies that do not require Health Canada regulatory approval, they must be at technology readiness level 8 or higher. This indicates that the technology is fully developed, is proven to work in real-world conditions, and is commercially available for clinical use.  

Technologies out of scope for this process include:  

• pharmaceutical drugs and vaccines 

• health human resources and health infrastructure  

• digital health technologies:  

• administrative and enterprise health information systems (including hospital information systems, electronic medical record systems, workflow supports, productivity tools, business intelligence and analytics tools) 

• facilitating communication between patient and health care professionals and third-party organizations (e.g., instant messaging apps for health). 

• health and care diaries that help users to manage their own health and wellness (e.g., health tracking information - fitness wearables) 

• population-level information that help users to maintain or promote healthy lifestyles.   

• General equipment, including environmental cleaning devices, furniture, assistive mobility add-ons, personal protective equipment, and other items that do not directly diagnose, monitor, or treat a medical condition are not eligible for assessment.
