2025 King County Nonprofit Employee Engagement Survey

Introduction

We need your help! King County, with funding from the Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy (VSHSL), is conducting the King County Nonprofit Employee Engagement Survey.

The survey increases the knowledge of how nonprofit employees feel about their jobs and how different factors related to job satisfaction may influence nonprofit organizations' recruitment, retention of staff, and ability to maintain high-quality services. Results from the 2021 and 2023 surveys helped inform a new workforce stabilization strategy that was included in the 2023 renewal of the VSHSL. The strategy invests $57 million to improve staff recruitment and retention within nonprofit organizations providing human services in King County. King County has also used the results to encourage public and private funders to provide better compensation for nonprofit workers. This is why it’s important to speak your mind!

King County has contracted with 501 Commons to develop and conduct this employee engagement survey to gather your feedback. Your responses are anonymous so no one at your organization, King County, or 501 Commons will know whether you participated or how you answered. You may answer as many questions as you feel comfortable. You can skip a question or select Prefer not to say, as needed.

You will be asked questions about the following topics:
  • Job
  • Supervisor
  • Workplace Culture
  • Client Services
  • Compensation & Benefits
  • Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access
  • Benefits & Job
  • Pay Level Considerations
  • Commuting & Remote Working
  • About You and Your Organization

Results from this survey will be reported in two ways:
  • Organization-specific Reports
Organizations with at least five survey participants will receive summary results (with no personal identifiable information) for their organization from 501 Commons when results are available in the fall of 2025. The organizational reports will not include any individual responses or demographic data that could identify an individual participant.

To better ensure confidentiality, organizations with fewer than five survey participants will not receive an organization-specific summary report. However, the survey data will be included in the King County-wide aggregate report. For more information on survey confidentiality, visit our survey FAQ.

  • King County-wide Report
Survey results will be combined and analyzed across all participating organizations to better understand the factors that contribute to nonprofit employee satisfaction and engagement across King County. The overall survey results for the nonprofit sector will be presented in the aggregate in a free report that will be released in the fall of 2025. The latest survey report, published in 2023, can be found here.
