Yarra's 2023 Club Development Series

Yarra's 2023 Club Development Series

Yarra City Council is excited to introduce a four-part series of FREE club development workshops set to take place in 2023. Hosted by Leisure Networks, these sessions will be catered specifically to Yarra’s community sports clubs with a focus of capacity building of club volunteers. For an example of what to expect from Leisure Networks, check out this video of a similar session with the City of Manningham.

The purpose of these sessions is to:
  1. Support clubs to meet the Sportsgrounds and Facilities Allocation Policy Criteria, and
  2. Upskill club volunteers in self-identified areas for development.

The Sportsgrounds and Facilities Allocation Policy will be in place from the 2025/26 financial year. In preparation for this, our aim is to support clubs to meet as much of the Policy's Essential Framework Criteria as possible and more importantly encourage best practice on and off the field. If you feel your club is fully competent in the topics offered, we would still encourage you to attend the sessions to share ideas and network with other sporting groups within Yarra.

Following from the completed Sport and Recreation Annual Survey, the Recreation team have been able to identify focus areas to further assist clubs in their development. The main areas highlighted by clubs included financial planning & management, child protection, volunteer Training and grant acquisition. As a result we have scheduled the following club development sessions:

Session One: Child Safe Sport, Fair Play Code, and Inclusion & Diversity (22 Feb)
Session Two: Grant Funding and Writing, Volunteers & Programs (May)
Session Three: Marketing and Promotion, Athletes and Participants (Jul)
Session Four: Club Governance and Finance (Sep)

Session 1 Child Safe Sport, Fair Play Code, and Inclusion & Diversity:

New Victorian Child Safe Standards have come into effect to better protect children and young people from abuse. On 1 July 2022, the Victorian Government brought in eleven new Standards that replaced Victoria’s original seven standards and principles.

The Victorian Government have also recently relaunched 2022 Fair Play Code, an update of the 2018 blueprint that sets out the standards of behaviour expected of everyone involved in sport and active recreation.

Inclusion and Diversity is a topic that has been gaining momentum in recent years and what these areas support. Diversity is what makes each of us unique and includes our backgrounds, ethnicity, gender, age, race, religion, disability, and sexual orientation. Inclusion occurs when people feel and are valued and respected regardless of their differences. Sport often reflects the full diversity of humanity; developing knowledge of how to remove perceived or real barriers to participation in sport through a shared understanding of Inclusion and Diversity Principles.
