The National Academies' Committee on Vehicle Efficiency Technology Assessment will consider technologies for improving fuel economy for Class 2b and 3 vehicles (heavy-duty pickups and vans, often used for towing and hauling).  The final report will advise the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on projected capabilities, costs, and barriers for deploying Class 2b and 3 fuel economy technologies between 2030-2040.

We are particularly looking for committee members with expertise in:

  • Gasoline, diesel, electrified, or hybrid powertrains
  • Vehicle technology applications and costs for heavy-duty pickups and vans
  • Vehicle efficiency
  • Fuel economy regulation structure and policy, especially for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles
  • Economics


The National Academies value a wide range of perspectives to strengthen the quality of our work. We carefully consider alternative viewpoints when formulating advice, convening experts with differing experience and perspectives, providing oversight, and conducting all other activities, and strive to foster an environment where all can participate fully.
