The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking suggestions for experts to participate in the new workshop series on Parkinson's and related disorders. The workshops will inform the development of the National Plan to End Parkinson's being created by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The National Academies will host two public workshops in 2027 on improving prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care delivery, and ultimately finding a cure for Parkinson's and related disorders. The first workshop will focus on research and the second workshop will focus on care, services, and supports. Each workshop planning committee will include individuals with relevant research, training, professional experience, and lived experience across public, private, clinical, and community-based settings.
For the purpose of this project, Parkinson's disease will include the neurodegenerative parkinsonisms, encompassing a spectrum of related conditions, including multiple system atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration, and Lewy body dementias.
Using these suggestions, National Academies staff will be looking to build the initial two planning committees of approximately 10 volunteer experts each in addition to collecting information for potential speakers, participants, and peer reviewers for any publications resulting from the activity.
Based on the Statement of Task, staff are looking for expertise particularly in the following areas:
- basic, translational, and clinical neuroscience (including movement disorders and neurodegeneration);
- epidemiology, population health, and environmental and occupational health;
- prevention, early detection, and biomarker development;
- clinical research, trial design, and regulatory science;
- therapeutic development (including drugs, biologics, devices, and digital health technologies);
- neurotoxicology;
- data science, biostatistics, and research infrastructure;
- clinical care across the disease continuum;
- rehabilitation and supportive services;
- psychology;
- health services research;
- disability, health economics, financing, reimbursement, and policy;
- patient advocacy and community engagement;
- other
