2027 NRC Research and Fellowship Programs

About the Activity & the Call for Experts



The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine seek experts to serve as reviewers for three prestigious research fellowships administered on behalf of federal research sponsors and established to support postdoctoral and/or senior researchers.

The opportunities include the NRC Research Associateship Programs (RAP), the Air Force Science & Technology Fellowship Program (AF STFP), and the Army Research Laboratory Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowships (ARL DPF).

The success of these programs is grounded in a rigorous merit review process that relies on subject matter experts from academia, industry, and government. Reviewers evaluate research proposals aligned with their disciplinary expertise in STEMM fields.

We invite individuals to self-nominate or nominate others to serve as reviewers, with particular interest in those who:

  • Demonstrate recognized expertise and professional achievement in their discipline
  • Hold a terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., Sc.D., M.D., or D.V.M.)
  • Are mid-career or senior researchers
  • Are affiliated with a U.S.-based institution and eligible to participate in U.S. federal review activities 
  • Are not employees or federal contractors of the sponsoring federal laboratories or agencies associated with these programs

Staff recommend providing a primary expertise, a personal or professional webpage, and any additional information to help match the nominee with appropriate review cycles. The Office of Fellowships will contact individuals whose expertise aligns with upcoming review cycles.

The National Academies value a wide range of perspectives to strengthen the quality of our work. We carefully consider alternative viewpoints when formulating advice, convening experts with differing experience and perspectives, providing oversight, and conducting all other activities, and strive to foster an environment where all can participate fully. We welcome your suggestions for a broad range of experts to work with us.
