Investing in work that promotes cooperation across meaningful political, religious, ideological, and other types of difference is vital for colleges and universities in our current moment. Led by Interfaith America, a national nonprofit dedicated to bridging divides, reducing prejudice, and promoting cooperation across difference, the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) and the University of Utah have partnered to establish the Utah Cooperation Cohort. Through this initiative, partners (University of Utah, Utah State University, Utah Valley University, Utah Tech University, Salt Lake Community College, Snow College, Weber State, Southern Utah University) will participate in a grant program designed to advance dialogue, collaboration, and bridgebuilding.
In 2026-2027, the Utah Cooperation Cohort will be offering grant funding to support projects that intentionally seek to promote cooperation across difference. This grant offers funding and support for educators, campus professionals, students, staff, health care practitioners, etc. to design, lead, and/or facilitate programming on Utah campuses and in the community. Each institution will have their own method for distributing this survey. A common evaluation process will guide the review and award process to ensure equitable, consistent, and transparent decision-making.
Grant recipients will be expected to: design and implement a program, project, or initiative focused on creating a culture of cooperation across difference; attend an in-person kickoff convening November 9–10, 2026, in Salt Lake City; participate in virtual cohort gatherings during the winter and spring of 2027; and complete a short final survey/report by the end of July 2027.
