Artificial intelligence (AI) technology integration has potential benefits in multiple areas of the electricity system from siting and permitting, grid planning, demand-side management, and the transmission and distribution systems. Some of these benefits include detection and diagnosis of anomalous events, federal environmental review accelerations, and system security and stability management. While potential benefits are notable, several challenges remain. Ensuring safe, reliable, and functional integration with existing elements of the electricity system is paramount to enabling the responsible use of AI in this sector.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Roundtable on Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change will host a workshop to explore the integration of AI in the electricity system. The workshop will provide a focused forum for electricity sector stakeholders, researchers, and policymakers to collectively assess where AI can deliver the greatest near-term value while managing associated risks. The workshop discussions will include lessons from ongoing initiatives, priority gaps in data, governance, and technical readiness, and actionable pathways for responsible AI integration that enhance grid reliability, resilience, and security. A poster session featuring early-career researchers will highlight new and cutting-edge applications of AI for the electricity system.
Call for Abstracts: The workshop invites graduate students and early-career researchers to submit abstracts for posters describing ongoing research, demonstrations, testbeds, datasets, and deployed applications related to the integration of artificial intelligence into the electricity system. Contributions from academia, national laboratories, industry, utilities, government agencies, and federally funded research projects are encouraged. While not limited to the below topics, the workshop is particularly interested in posters that address the following:
- AI for grid operations, reliability, and resilience;
- Human-AI collaboration in grid operations, including human-AI teaming, accountability frameworks for agentic AI, and governance and failure models of autonomous decision-making;
- AI for electricity system markets, economics, and business operations, including complexity within and among these systems and networks;
- Cybersecurity considerations in the context of the use of AI in power system operations, including both AI for security of grid operations and security of AI itself; and
- Case studies illustrating lessons learned in AI deployment with the grid.
In addition, posters may address emerging AI methods, including agentic or foundational model approaches, in any of the above topic areas.
Selection Process: Abstracts will be reviewed by planning committee members. Authors must submit their applications by August 21, 2026. Selected posters will be notified by September 7, 2026 and will have the opportunity to participate in the full workshop in person in Washington, DC on October 26-27, 2026. Travel and lodging will be covered by the National Academies for invited poster presenters. Presenters will be acknowledged on the workshop’s website and in an appendix in the workshop proceedings—a publication from the National Academies Press that summarizes the workshop discussions.
