OverviewCenter for Energy and Environment (CEE) is looking for homes in northern Minnesota in which to install and study new high-performance cold climate air source heat pump (ASHPs). If you are interested in replacing your heating and cooling system with an energy efficient heat pump, you could receive a free heat pump for participating in this study! This research will support efficiency rebate programs by quantifying the performance improvements from ASHPs that meet the Department of Energy’s new Cold Climate Challenge Heat Pump Specification. This project is funded by the Conservation Applied Research and Development (CARD) program, administered by the Minnesota Department of Commerce, Division of Energy Resources.
The project team is currently recruiting sites for ASHP installation and performance monitoring. If you are interested in participating, please complete the following survey. Why participate?
Selected participants will have a brand-new cold climate ASHP system installed in their home at no cost to them. The installed value is estimated at $12,000 to $20,000.
Who is eligible?
Single-family homeowners in northern Minnesota with centrally ducted heating systems who are interested in installing a fully electric cold-climate ASHP system should apply. Participation is subject to eligibility and availability.
What does participation mean?Interested homeowners must complete this short survey to determine eligibility. CEE will work with selected qualified sites and local installers to install a new all-electric ASHP in their home, fully replacing the existing heating and cooling system. CEE will work with participants to schedule the 3 to 6 performance-measuring visits (each 1 to 8 hours long) to install, maintain, and remove energy-measuring sensors on the heat pump. The sensors will remain in place for up to two years to gather performance data. Participants will be asked to share historical utility usage data and provide feedback on their experience with their new heat pump. To determine your eligibility for the project, proceed by completing the following survey. Completion of this form is completely voluntary. If you apply now, you can change your mind about participating later. This survey should take approximately 5-15 minutes to complete by computer or mobile device. The first page will request that you upload pictures of your HVAC system and electric panel so we can evaluate feasibility of participation. All other pages have quick short answer or multiple choice questions about you and your home.
