Fall 2026 Small Works, Big Topics COP Registration Form

ABOUT THIS COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE

Racism. Colorism. Disability. LGBTQ+. Immigration. Ableism. School Violence... How do we discuss complex, difficult topics with our leaders, the children, and the communities we serve? Let’s practice how we talk about these issues to build conversations and understanding. This 9-session series, facilitated by Dr. Liza Xet Smith, is a kick-off to an equity journey through the lens of children’s literature. It builds on the knowledge that we are all in different places in our equity journey, and it is an opportunity to engage others in complex problems through the door of children’s work. Participants will leave each session with titles of works for social justice-related topics, talking points to continue exploring the topic, and additional resources to continue learning. This series is for leaders interested in using children’s literature in their practice and anyone seeking language for tricky topics to build a more equitable world.
