NLN Outcomes & Competencies, May '26 Survey

The NLN continues to make progress on identifying outcomes and competencies for nursing programs from prelicensure (LPN/LVN, diploma/ADN, BSN) through graduate (MSN, DNP, PhD) programs. We now seek your feedback on the following proposed outcomes across the academic levels. 
Outcome #1: FOUNDATIONS OF CLINICAL PRACTICE

Prelicensure/Undergraduate Programs. (1) Foundational Clinical Knowledge: Focuses on the foundational information from the science disciplines needed to practice as an entry level nurse. (2) Foundational Nursing Skills and Practice Readiness: Focuses on the skills of nursing to be ready to enter clinical nursing practice. 
MSN/DNP/DNE Programs. Advanced Nursing Practice: Focuses on two pathways for advanced nursing practice: advanced practice clinical pathway (i.e., CNS, CNM, CRNA, NP) and non-clinical pathway (i.e., advanced nurse educator, nurse leader). Both pathways require assessment, interventions, judgement and decision-making, technical and procedural skills, and evaluation.
PhD ProgramsEquity, Ethics, and Social Responsibility: Focuses on the ethical conduct of research that addresses health equity and a social good.

Outcome #2: HOLISTIC HUMAN CARE 

Prelicensure/Undergraduate Programs. (1) Lifespan, Family, and Developmental Care: Focuses on specialty nursing clinical practice. (2) Human-Centered Care: Focuses on care of people respecting them as human beings. (3) Psychological Adaptation: Focuses on psychological care of patients and families. (4) Physiologic Adaptation: Focuses on physiologic care of patients. 
MSN/DNP/DNE Programs. Holistic Human Care: Focuses on care and management of patients/clients.
PhD Programs. Workforce Development and Maintenance: Focuses on becoming competent as a future nurse educator and mentoring the next generation of nurse scientists.

Outcome #3: COMMUNICATION 

Prelicensure/Undergraduate Programs. Communication: Focuses on interpersonal communications. 
MSN/DNP/DNE Programs. Communication: Focuses on interpersonal communications. 
PhD Programs. Communication: Focuses on interpersonal communications and dissemination of scholarship to the public and scientific communities.

Outcome #4: COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE

Prelicensure/Undergraduate Programs. Collaborative Practice: Focuses on intra- and interprofessional collaborations and effective team management. 
MSN/DNP/DNE Programs. Collaborative Practice: Focuses on intra- and interprofessional collaborations and effective team management
PhD Programs. Collaborative Practice: Focuses on collaborating within and between professions to generate research findings

Outcome #5: LEADERSHIP

Prelicensure/Undergraduate Programs. Leadership: Focuses on systems thinking and nursing leadership
MSN/DNP/DNE Programs. Leadership: Focuses on professional behaviors and team-based influence
PhD Programs. Leadership: Focuses on leading in science, public policy, and systems

Outcome #6 NURSING SCHOLARLY INQUIRY AND UNDERPINNINGS

Prelicensure/Undergraduate Programs. Nursing Scholarly Inquiry and Underpinnings: Focuses on improving outcomes through data-based practice, quality improvement, and research.
MSN/DNP/DNE Programs. Scientific Underpinnings of Nursing Practice: Focuses on improving outcomes through data-based practice, quality improvement, and research.
PhD Programs. (1) Advanced Research and Translation Science: Focuses on the generation and application of knowledge through theory and research. (2) Evaluation: Focuses on evaluating the results of one’s own research and critiquing the results of other research.

Outcome #7 PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY

Prelicensure/Undergraduate Programs. Professional Identity: Focuses on the values, ethics, and professional comportment, growth, and development of nurses and the profession.
MSN/DNP/DNE Programs. Professional Identity: Focuses on the values, ethics, and professional comportment, growth, and development of nurses and the profession.
PhD Programs. Professional Identity: Focuses on the values, ethics, and professional comportment, growth, and development of nurses and the profession.

Outcome #8 NURSE WELL-BEING

Prelicensure/Undergraduate Programs. Nurse Well-Being: Focuses on the personal well-being of nurses and sustainability of the environment.
MSN/DNP/DNE Programs. Nurse Well-Being: Focuses on the personal well-being of nurses and sustainability of the environment.
PhD Programs. Nurse Well-Being: Focuses on the personal well-being of nurses and nurse scientists as well as generating evidence to show effectiveness of well-being interventions.

Outcome #9 DIGITAL HEALTH AND INNOVATIONS

Prelicensure/Undergraduate Programs. Digital Health and Innovations: Focuses on digital competence and modern clinical tools.
MSN/DNP/DNE Programs. Digital Health and Innovations: Focuses on digital competence and modern clinical tools.
PhD Programs. Digital Health and Innovations: Focused on emerging technologies, informatics, and data science.

Outcome #10 POPULATION HEALTH AND PREVENTION

Prelicensure/Undergraduate Programs. Population Health and Prevention: Focuses on the health of communities and populations.
MSN/DNP/DNE Programs. Population Health and Prevention: Focuses on the health of communities and populations.
PhD Programs. Population Health and Prevention: Focuses on design, implementation, and evaluation of population health interventions.
