Lung Friendly Schools Needs Assessment: May 2026

Background: In 2014, the American Lung Association distributed an assessment tool through its networks to school personnel to gain a greater understanding about the perceptions among staff regarding asthma medication policies, as well as actual practices at the school and school district level. Over 1,500 people from 38 states responded. These findings provided recommendations that were published in a report and used as a roadmap to advance and improve access and Asthma- Friendly environments.

You are invited: The American Lung Association welcomes and invites all parties to share insights on “Lung Friendly Schools and Improving Access to Asthma medications in Schools: Laws, policies, practices and recommendations” as a progress update from 2014. Your feedback will help tell the story of our progress over the past decade, the current status and future needs.

Who should complete this assessment?: This assessment is intended for school administrators, school nurses, school health staff, youth serving organization staff, early childhood educators, parents or caregivers and community partners.
