The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking nominations of experts to participate in a new study on battery energy storage technologies for defense applications. The committee will explore existing and emergent battery energy storage technologies and opportunities for use in U.S. and allied government military applications. They'll assess the strengths and weaknesses of these technologies in terms of performance, safety, and manufacturability across technology and manufacturing readiness levels; and identify areas for research and development. The committee will produce a report with conclusions and recommendations to enhance battery energy storage for defense applications.
Using these nominations, National Academies staff will build a committee of approximately 12 volunteer experts in addition to collecting information for potential speakers, participants, and peer reviewers for any publications resulting from the activity.
Based on the Statement of Task, staff are looking for expertise particularly in the following areas:
- materials science
- electrochemistry
- electrical engineering
- mechanical engineering
- energy systems and power management
- computer science and software engineering
- battery safety management
- manufacturing
- supply chains
