DEFINTIONS

Attendance and Participation

  • Attendance: Refers to the act of being present (in person or virtually) at an arts or cultural event. This includes visiting museums, attending concerts, watching theater performances, or any instance where you go to or watch an event as a member of the audience.
  • Participation: Refers to a more active form of engagement with arts and culture. This may include performing, creating, volunteering, organizing, or otherwise contributing to the planning or executing an arts or cultural event. Participation goes beyond attending—it involves direct involvement or interaction with the event or organization.
By distinguishing between these two types of engagement, we aim to better understand how frequently people attend events and how actively they participate in shaping and experiencing our community's arts and culture.

Arts and Cultural Events

If the main focus of an event is artistic performance or visual arts, please consider it an arts event. If the primary focus is cultural tradition, identity, or community celebration, please consider it a cultural event for this survey.
  • Arts events refer to events focused on creative expression in traditional or contemporary art forms. This includes live music concerts of any genre, theater, dance, or opera performances, art exhibitions and gallery openings, film screenings or film festivals, poetry readings, and similar activities where the main purpose is experiencing or engaging with artistic performance or visual arts.
  • Cultural events are defined broadly to include both traditional and non-traditional means of celebrating, sharing, or exploring cultural identity, heritage, and community traditions. This includes festivals such as food festivals, heritage celebrations, neighborhood gatherings, Pride, Juneteenth, or Dia de los Muertos events, as well as religious or spiritual celebrations open to the community, cultural parades, community gatherings like block parties and potlucks, workshops or classes on cultural crafts, dance, or cooking, and even pop culture conventions, sporting events, or car shows tied to community traditions. The main purpose of these events is cultural connection, celebration, or education.
If the main focus of an event is artistic performance or visual arts, please consider it an arts event. If the primary focus is cultural tradition, identity, or community celebration, please consider it a cultural event for this survey.
