2026 Foundation of the AAGL: Javier F. Magrina Excellence in Robotics Award

Javier F. Magrina, MD, is an exceptional leader and mentor who has touched the lives of innumerable students, residents, fellows, and gynecological surgeons worldwide through his trainings, lectures, videos, observer programs, mentorship, advising, and coaching. Known as a “master surgeon,” Dr. Magrina’s pioneering robotic techniques and technical innovations have benefited many patients and advanced robotics in Gynecology. In addition, he has advanced progress in robotics through publication of over 50 clinical studies exclusively related to robotic surgery and in peer reviewed journals, publication of 17 book chapters on robotic surgical techniques and a textbook on Robotic Gynecologic Surgery, and authorship of 46 robotic surgical videos.
 
The Excellence in Robotic Surgery Award, established in 2022 in honor of Dr. Magrina, recognizes an outstanding surgeon for their innovations and teachings in robotic-assisted technology. A Foundation of the AAGL designated committee will review applications/nominations and select a winner. The winner chosen will receive recognition at the annual AAGL Global Congress on MIGS and a commemorative award. Award benefits will be determined annually by the Foundation Board of Directors based on funding. This award is supported by a generous contribution from Intuitive Surgical.

This application may be submitted by nominating a qualified individual or a candidate may self-nominate. Self-nominations must provide a letter of reference. 

Award Eligibility

Requirements:

The nominee must:
  • Be a member of the AAGL and recognized as an outstanding robotic surgeon for their significant contributions in robotic-assisted gynecological surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System.
  • Complete a minimum of 60 robotic procedures during the last 12 months. Documentation is required. Contact academic.programs@intusurg.com to request the Intuitive Surgical da Vinci verified case volume report.
  • Has published significant research in robotics surgery (documentation of literary references is required)
  • Presented at national and/or international meetings and/or postgraduate courses on robotic surgery.
  • Be a teacher/mentor of robotic surgery for 10 or more years.
  • Has contributed meaningfully to the advancement of robotic surgery through education, research, and/or innovation. 
  • Board Members from the FAAGL Board are not eligible for nomination during their active status on the board.
  • If selected, the winner must attend the Foundation of the AAGL’s Awards Ceremony held during a General Session at the AAGL Global Congress, in November 2026, in Boston, MA, to be acknowledged. The winner will be announced at one of the General Session during the FAAGL Awards Ceremony and invited onstage to accept the award in person.
