2026 Required Data on SROs and MSEH

Overview

By August 1 of each year, superintendents and charter school leaders are required to report to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), as well as publicly present to the relevant school committee: (i) the cost to the school district or charter school of assigning a school resource officer (SRO); (ii) a description of the proposed budget for mental, social or emotional health support personnel for the school; and (iii) the number of school-based arrests, citations and court referrals made in the previous year (Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 71, Section 37P(d) (G. L. c. 71 §37P(d)).

Additionally, each district or charter school with an SRO is required to annually submit to DESE their SRO memorandum of understanding (MOU) and operating procedures (OP).

To ensure compliance with state law, please complete this survey by providing the following information by August 1, 2026.   • For school year 2025-2026 (SY26)
    • Number of SROs employed by the district or charter school for SY26
    • Cost to the district or charter school of assigning SRO(s)
  • For school year 2026-2027 (SY27): Proposed budget for mental, social or emotional health support personnel
For school-based arrests, citations, and court referrals, please submit the data via SSDR by the deadline posted on Reporting Schedule. The SSDR handbook can be found at School Safety and Discipline Report (SSDR).
