PC Footwear and Feasibility

Contact
What is your affected gene?
Because of the variability of PC symptoms, particularly pain, finding effective functional measures for use in studies and clinical trials has been extremely difficult. These questions will help us better understand how footwear affects your daily comfort and mobility, and the feasibility of using sensor insoles for measurements. Your responses will add knowledge, guide future research and studies, including future trials. Thank you for helping us!

These instrumented insoles would be:
- Very thin (about 2 mm)
- Lightweight and flexible
- Sized to fit your shoes
- Designed to have minimal impact on comfort

They could help us measure:
- Weight loaded on your feet during daily activities
- Walking speed and time
- Standing time
- Balance and movement patterns

Because PC pain is often related to pressure and weight-bearing, information from insole measurements may help us better assess whether a treatment is working in clinical trials.

Overall, we’d like to understand whether wearing these insoles during most of your waking hours (including at home) would be feasible for you.

Example images of sandals or slide-in footwear types:
1. What do you usually wear on your feet while at home?
Indoor Footwear Pattern
When inside your home during waking hours, about what estimated percentage of time do you usually wear the following? (Please estimate the percentage (%) of time in each text box for the type of footwear you use. If you don't use a type of footwear, please enter 0. Your best estimate is fine - totals do not need to equal 100%.)
2. What do you usually wear on your feet when not inside your home?
Outdoor Footwear Pattern
When outside your home (work, school, errands), about what estimated percentage of time do you usually wear the following? (Please estimate the percentage (%) of time in each text box for the type of footwear you use. If you don't use a type of footwear, please enter 0. Your best estimate is fine - totals do not need to equal 100%.)
On longer days (work, school, travel):
3. Footwear Comfort
When choosing footwear, what matters most beyond general comfort? (Check all that apply)
What footwear modifications (insoles, orthotics, etc.) do you use?
On average, how much does footwear affect your foot pain?
0 No Impact12345678910 Severe Impact i.e. makes pain worse
4. Daily Movement

Compared to someone without PC, do you feel:
You walk slower?
You are slower rising from sitting to standing?
5. Insole Feel Preference

If you had to choose, would you prefer:
What size of insole would you wear? Please write your size in the space next to the size system that you use.
For the following questions, please think about a pair of thin sensor insoles to be worn throughout your waking hours in your compatible footwear (generally, most types of footwear will be compatible, as long as they have a structured sole. In other words, bare-foot or socks are not compatible). If needed, we can provide two pairs of insoles to reduce the hassle of switching insoles between pairs of footwear.
6. Comfort of Adding a Thin Insole (Outdoor Footwear)

Imagine placing a thin, flexible sensor insole inside your outdoor footwear (it could go under your current insole if needed).

How comfortable do you think this would be?
7. Time Spent Indoors

On a typical day, what percentage of your waking time do you spend indoors at home?
8. Comfort of Adding a Thin Insole (Indoor Footwear)

Imagine placing the same type of thin, flexible sensor insole inside the footwear you wear at home.

How comfortable do you think this would be?
9. Realistic Insole Wear Time

We are trying to understand how much of your standing and "moving-around" time (including walking) could be captured by the thin insoles, or how much will be missed. (Being able to stand or walk more with less pain has been voiced by PCers as the most desired functional improvement of an effective treatment.)

Please think about a typical day.
Time wearing Compatible Footwear

Of the total time you spend standing or moving around on any typical day, what percentage of that time are you wearing footwear that could hold the thin insole? (Generally any footwear with a structured sole.)

On a bad or extra painful day:
Would you need to remove your compatible footwear during the day for some reason, but continue your activities involving your feet (e.g., standing or moving around) while staying barefoot or wearing only socks? (In other words, continue to stand or move around, but not able to wear the sensor insoles.)
Time Insoles Would Be Worn

Now imagine the thin insoles are secured in your compatible footwear.

Of the time you are wearing your compatible footwear, what percentage of the time do you think you could realistically keep the insoles in place?

10. Feasibility & Barriers
We would like to see which shoes, slippers, or other footwear you are using. Please take photos of all the footwear you use often, both inside the home and outdoors, and upload them here. You can upload multiple photos. If you have any issues uploading, you can email the photos to info@pachyonychia.org.
