The Department is funding a limited number of participants to enroll in the World Languages Proficiency Academy on June 22-24 at Westfield State University (lodging and evening meals are not included). To support participation from a broad range of districts, funded spaces will be allocated in phases on a first-come, first-served basis, until no spaces remain.
Phase 1: World Language Department Leaders from New Districts
(1 per district/charter school)
Phase 1 invites one World Languages department leader or their delegate from any Massachusetts public school district or charter school that did not send a delegate to the Proficiency Academy in 2024 or 2025 to register for one of the DESE-funded spaces. Registration opens Monday, February 2nd, at 12:01 PM and ends at Monday, February 9th at 12:00 PM.
Phase 2: World Language Department Leaders from Any District/Charter School
(1 per district/charter school)
Phase 2 invites one World Languages department leader or their delegate from any Massachusetts public school district or charter school to register for one of the DESE-funded spaces. Registration opens Monday, February 9th at 12:01 PM and ends at Monday, February 23rd at 12:00 PM.
Phase 3: Changemakers
(Registered by district leader; 1 per district/charter school, if spaces remain after Phase 1 and Phase 2)
Phase 3 invites school district and/or department leaders (1 per district) to recommend an educator for participation as part of the Changemakers category.
This category is for educators from historically underrepresented racial, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds. The Department seeks to increase diversity within World Languages programs by supporting educators whose identities and experiences reflect the rich diversity of the students we serve in Massachusetts. Participants in this priority group are committed to advancing equity and inclusion in their schools and communities.
Recommenders should confirm with the registrant that they are willing and able to attend the Academy prior to registering them and must provide the following information about their recommended Changemaker:
- Name (first and last)
- Home Address
- Phone Number
- School/District
- School Address
- Language(s) Taught
- Grade Level(s) Taught
- Role in District
- A brief description of the registrant's capacity to contribute to the diversification of World Languages leadership in Massachusetts
- A brief description of how the registrant demonstrates potential to impact the field of World Languages positively
Phase 3 registration opens Monday, February 23rd at 12:01 PM and closes Monday, March 2nd at 12:00 PM.
Phase 4: All MA Public K-12 World Language Educators
(If spaces remain after Phase 3; first-come, first-served basis until no spaces remain)
Phase 4 invites all World Language educators from Massachusetts public school districts or public charter schools to register for the 2024 World Languages Proficiency Academy. Registration opens Monday, March 2nd at 12:01 PM and will remain open until Saturday, March 31st at 5:00 PM, or until all DESE-funded spaces are filled.
