2026 AAGL SurgeryU Video Competition - March Madness

SURGERYU - "The Mind of a Surgeon Video" March Madness Fellowship Contest!
Contest Overview:
The AAGL SurgeryU Complex Benign Gynecology Fellowship (CBGF) March Madness Video Competition is designed to highlight surgical thinking, technical skill, and teaching excellence among AAGL-accredited CBGF programs. This competition follows a March Madness–style single-elimination bracket, with advancement determined by a combination of SurgeryU Board review and Instagram audience voting.

Eligibility
• Open to AAGL-accredited CBGF programs only.
• One submission package per program.
• Fellows may collaborate on a submission; up to two fellows may be featured per video.

Video Submission
Each participating program must submit TWO original videos:

• Video A: Maximum 3 minutes (Technical Deep Dive)
• Video B: Maximum 90 seconds (Rapid-Fire Surgical Pearl)

Videos must be original, de-identified, and compliant with HIPAA and institutional consent policies.

Submission Options
Programs may choose ONE of the following submission options:

Option 1: One Case, Two Videos
• Both videos may originate from the same surgical case.
• Each video must highlight a DIFFERENT surgical concept, skill, or teaching point.
• Narration and educational objectives must be distinct.

Option 2: Two Separate Cases
• Each video may originate from a different surgical case.
• Each video must independently meet all content and quality requirements.

Content Distinction Requirement
Videos may NOT be shortened, sped-up, or minimally re-narrated versions of the same content. The SurgeryU Board will assess whether each video provides unique educational value. Submissions that do not demonstrate clear content distinction may be disqualified.

Graphic Content and Social Media Compliance
This competition is hosted on a public social media platform. All submitted videos must be appropriate for posting on Instagram and comply with Instagram community standards.

Certain procedures may require brief graphic views for clinical context and may be essential for educational purposes. When such footage is unavoidable, the duration should be minimized, and content should be edited to limit prolonged or unnecessary exposure.

Surgical footage should be framed to emphasize the operative field and educational content. Programs are responsible for ensuring submissions are edited appropriately for public viewing.

The SurgeryU Board reserves the right to request edits to, withhold, or exclude submitted content that may violate platform guidelines or pose a risk of removal.

Acceptable Content
Videos should focus on a specific MIGS technique, skill, or decision-making moment. Examples include, but are not limited to:
• Hysteroscopic isthmocele/septum resection
• Dissection techniques and anatomic planes (uterine artery ligation, approach to obliterated posterior cul-du-sac, rectal shaving)
• Suturing, energy use, and ergonomics
• Management of challenging anatomy or intraoperative decision-making

Enhancements such as annotations, overlays, and radiologic or ultrasound correlation are encouraged.

Video Style and Format
• First-person (POV) surgical footage is strongly encouraged.
• Voice-over narration is required.
• Slide-based presentations are not permitted.
• Video format: MP4 or MOV; resolution ≥1080p preferred.

Review and Scoring
All submitted videos will be reviewed by the SurgeryU Board. Advancement throughout the competition will be determined by a combination of expert review and audience engagement via Instagram polls, consistent with the educational mission of SurgeryU.

The SurgeryU Board reserves the right to consider multiple factors when determining advancement, including educational value, technical execution, clarity of teaching, and overall engagement. Rubric-based evaluation is used to promote consistency and fairness across submissions. Rubric scores are used internally and are not publicly released.

Tournament Structure
• Round of 32 & Sweet 16: Video A (3-minute video) used for matchups
• Elite 8, Final 4, & Championship: Video B (90-second video) used for matchups

*Initial seeding will be based on SurgeryU Board review.
