The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking suggestions for experts to participate in the new Forum on Nature-based Solutions. The Forum will focus on nature-based solutions (NbS) as innovative and sustainable strategies to reduce risks such as flooding, coastal erosion, and extreme weather, while enhancing biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and community well-being. The three-day Forum will serve as a networking and knowledge-sharing event for professionals such as engineers, scientists, policymakers, planners, and others working on NbS to discuss best practices and challenges for widespread implementation. Participants will explore innovations in the application of NbS, with a focus on addressing scaling up these approaches and advancing collaborative solutions.
Using these suggestions, National Academies staff will be looking to build a committee of approximately 3-5 volunteer experts in addition to collecting information for potential speakers, participants, and peer reviewers for the proceedings resulting from the activity.
Based on the Statement of Task, staff are looking for expertise related to nature-based solutions, particularly in the following areas:
- Natural infrastructure design
- Community resilience
- Watershed planning
- Environmental and ecosystem sciences
- Community and regional planning
- Infrastructure finance and innovative green funding
- Climate adaptation and hazard mitigation
- Infrastructure permitting and policy
- Collaborative governance and community engagement
- Health and economic benefits of green spaces
