2026 Top Colleges for Innovation Award Application

INTRODUCTION TO THE 2026 INSIGHT INTO ACADEMIA TOP COLLEGES FOR INNOVATION AWARD APPLICATION

For over 50 years, Insight Into Academia magazine has been recognized as the leading publication advancing best practices in higher education. After all, "Empowering Leaders. Driving Innovation." is our tagline!

In today's rapidly evolving higher education landscape, being recognized as an innovative institution should not be the responsibility of just a few campus administrators, but rather must be a campus-wide commitment to creativity and change.  Each section of the Top Colleges for Innovation application focuses on essential dimensions of innovation and each plays a vital role in growth, evolution and impact.

The Insight Into Academia Top Colleges for Innovation Award honors colleges and universities where innovation is woven into an institution’s vision, actions, and impact. They use creative and transformative initiatives to reshape teaching, learning, research and administrative processes to better meet the evolving needs of students, employees, and society in our rapidly changing global landscape.

Recipients of the 2026 Top Colleges for Innovation Award are shaping the future of higher education. Their efforts lead to measurable results and serve as national exemplars for what’s possible when bold ideas meet a defined and continuous commitment to their own campus, community, and society as a whole.

Types of Awards Offered
We are offering opportunities to be recognized with more than one award:
  • Top Colleges for Innovation - all winners receive this recognition
  • Top Colleges for Innovation Champions - represents the top scorers and highest ranking winners
  • Top Colleges for Innovation in each category - additional winners will be selected as the top innovator for each of the section titles in this application

Why Institutions Should Apply
T
he Top Colleges for Innovation Award goes beyond just celebrating new ideas. This recognition signals to campus constituents, communities, peer institutions, policymakers, and partners that you are a forward-thinking leader in your field. It reflects a campus designed not just to keep pace, but improves how learning and community are experienced.

Receiving a national award for higher education innovation:

  • Elevates your national profile among your peer institutions as a leader and a forward-thinker
  • Attracts the best and brightest students to your campus
  • Attracts top talent to fill faculty and staff positions
  • Strengthens funding and philanthropic opportunities through donations, grants, and alumni outreach
  • Positions your institution as a role model for other higher education leaders
This award honors campuses that don’t simply react to change, but use creativity and a deep understanding of their community to shape it, building institutions that are resilient, relevant, and focused on uplifting the people they serve.

Scoring
Each application is reviewed by the Insight Into Academia Top Colleges for Innovation Award committee and receives two scores--one is embedded in the application itself, the second is computed by committee members' input after a comprehensive review. Each institution that meets a minimum total score as set forth by the committee will be named a 2026 Insight Into Academia Top Colleges for Innovation Award recipient.  Winners that exceed a higher minimum score will have the opportunity to be named a Top Colleges for Innovation Champion.

The award committee evaluates each institution within the context of its own mission, resources, and opportunities. We understand that every institution is different, may have limited resources, the same level of research activity, or the ability to take on costly initiatives—and that’s why our process centers on context. Rather than comparing institutions to one another, we focus on how each school uses the tools it has to create meaningful, forward-thinking change. Innovation isn’t about scale—it’s about impact, intentionality, and continued progress on your campus.
