VAI - Grad School 2026 High School Graduate Summer Research Program

Dear Applicant

Van Andel Institute Graduate School offers recently graduated high school students the exceptional opportunity to participate in an eight-week paid biomedical research experience through the High School Graduate Summer Research Program, held from June 1 to July 31, 2026, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

As one of ten selected participants, you’ll engage directly in hands-on molecular and cellular research, exploring DNA, RNA, proteins, and cells under expert supervision. You’ll be a valued member of an active research team—maintaining lab records, analyzing data, and following professional lab safety practices.

Complementing your laboratory activities, the program offers mentorship from leading scientists, workshops, journal clubs, career-development sessions, and opportunities to connect with peers through social and networking events. The program values heterogeneity, inclusivity, and multifaceted perspectives, welcoming applicants from a broad range of backgrounds.

You’ll earn $15 per hour for full-time work (8 hours a day, Monday through Friday). The program allows for reasonable scheduling adjustments when possible or necessary. This is a valuable opportunity to strengthen your scientific skills, engage in real-world research, and become part of a vibrant community of aspiring scientists.

Sincerely
