Workshop on Media Literacy Education: Call for Experts

About the Activity & the Call for Experts

Learn more about the activity here

The National Academies is seeking nominations of experts to serve on a 6-8 member planning committee for a 2-day public workshop focused on how to support the development of media literacy for children and youth in the context of a complex information ecosystem. The workshop will explore key issues such as:

• What do we know about how and where children and youth get their information and how they navigate online environments? How can and should this inform the design of media literacy programs (both in school and out-of-school)?

• What is the current status of media literacy instruction and programs? How widespread are they? What are the goals of media literacy programs and interventions?

• What is known about which approaches or strategies for supporting development of media literacy are most effective? What are the most promising programs and program models in both formal and out-of-school settings?

• How can media literacy be integrated effectively across content areas?

The National Academies value a wide range of perspectives to strengthen the quality of our work. We carefully consider alternative viewpoints when formulating advice, convening experts with differing experience and perspectives, providing oversight, and conducting all other activities, and strive to foster an environment where all can participate fully. We welcome your suggestions for a broad range of experts to work with us.
