Biosolids are everyone’s business.
This quick survey asks for your thoughts on how Auckland should manage biosolids after 2035.
Biosolids are the soil-like ‘leftovers’ from the wastewater treatment process. They’re partly made from treated human waste (poo) — but they also contain billions of microorganisms (the good bugs) that help clean our wastewater. These bugs break down carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. After treatment, the remaining material is a digested sludge (a bit like composting) - this is called biosolids.
Right now, biosolids from our Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant are being used to help rehabilitate
Te Motu a Hiaroa (Puketutu Island). As that project nears completion, it’s time to plan what happens next.
Over the next year, we’ll be assessing our options for managing biosolids — and we want
your input to help shape Auckland’s plan for our future.
