2026 Massachusetts Student Government Day - ELECTED Student Registration

ELECTED Student Registration

This year's Student Government Day will be held in person at the Massachusetts State House on Friday, April 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 

THIS REGISTRATION IS FOR ONE ELECTED STUDENT AND ONE FACULTY ADVISOR OR CHAPERONE

Due to capacity limits, ONE student may attend per school as well as ONE faculty advisor or other approved adult.
A separate registration will be available in March for ONE alternate student IF the elected student cannot make it.
We will not have role assignments available for alternate students and cannot guarantee admission for more than one student and one adult per school.

Registration: This year registration will occur on a rolling basis:
  • January 30, 2026 - is the registration deadline for students to be assigned a guaranteed role and be eligible to participate in the speech competition for electing the student governor and lieutenant governor
  • February 27, 2026 - is the final registration deadline/close of online registration. 
  • March 1, 2026 - March 31, 2026 - Registration for Alternate attendees (attending in place of delegate) 
Student Government Day: During Student Government Day, students will replicate activities of the General Court (Massachusetts state legislature) by debating and voting on legislation. The elected students, and alternates where possible, will be assigned a role prior to the event. All students will hear from legislative leaders and have the opportunity to give testimony on two current bills. Depending on their assigned roles, students will then continue debating legislation or observe state government from the perspective of a Supreme Court justice or constitutional officer.

Faculty advisors (to be identified in this form) will be sent each student's role and are responsible for keeping students informed, including the two bills up for debate, and the Student Government Day Handbook. Each school's elected student will also have the opportunity to participate in a speech competition to determine the student governor and lieutenant for Student Government Day.

Student Elections:  We encourage schools to elect one student to attend the event; we encourage the election of an alternate to attend IF the primary cannot make it. While the method of electing student designees and student alternates may vary from school to school, we suggest following some standard procedures: 
  1. Elections should be school-wide, with candidates limited to juniors and seniors.
  2. Elections should be open to all juniors and seniors, regardless of academic performance or placement in advanced government classes.
  3. To allow more students the opportunity to participate, no student who has been the school's elected student designee or student alternate should run for re-election.
  4. Elections should be conducted in the spirit of M.G.L. Chapter 6, Section 12M, which states, "Such elections shall be conducted under the supervision of the principals…and insofar as possible, shall be conducted as are elections of members of the General Court."

IMPORTANT NOTES:
  1. Due to capacity limits, only ONE student may attend per school as well as ONE faculty advisor or other approved adult. We welcome alternate students to attend IF the elected student cannot make it. We will not have role assignments available for alternate students and cannot guarantee admission for more than one student and one adult per school
  2. In order to submit the registration form for Student Government Day, the school must assure that the selected student(s) are over the age of 14 and that they have read and signed the consent forms for Student Government Day Activities. The school further assures that it will keep the original signed consent form on file and that, upon request, it will provide the consent form to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The consent forms are available on the Student Government Day website.

This identifier will be only shared with DESE for internal data collection and monitoring. This year we will be offering programming opportunities for the advisor/adult chaperone attending with your student.
We will have State House and Supreme Judicial Court tours available as well as additional options. Space is limited. Onsite registration for each opportunity will be available on a first come, first served basis

Please note: All opportunities will fall during the program time for students.

We will be providing lunch this year as part of the program. Please list any dietary restrictions that any members of your group have below.

We ask that all participants commit to attending the full event. Given the limited number or role assignments, we will be unable to assign roles such as Supreme Court justice, constitutional officer, governor, lieutenant governor, speaker of the house, or senate president without this confirmation. Have you confirmed with your student they are able and committed to staying through the conclusion of the event (2 p.m.)? *This question is required.
IMPORTANT
By submitting this form, the school assures that the student(s) whose names are listed on the form are over the age of 14 and that they have read and signed the Consent Form for Student Government Day Activities. The school further assures that it will keep the original signed consent form on file and that, upon request, it will provide the consent form to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

NOTE:
This registration is for ONE elected student and ONE adult chaperone only.  Due to capacity limitations, we are unable to accommodate additional attendees.  To register an alternate in the event that the elected student cannot attend, please visit the Student Government Day website between 3/1/26 and 3/31/26.
