In January 2023, the Kansas City Council passed Ordinance #220966, officially acknowledging the City’s role in sanctioning racial segregation, enslavement, and discriminatory practices against Black residents. This historic step established the Mayor’s Commission on Reparations to investigate harm and recommend actions toward justice and repair. This project is about truth, healing, and accountability. Through research, community engagement, and storytelling, we will document the harms caused by city policies and practices — past and present — and identify solutions that build a more equitable future for Black residents. By completing this 5-minute survey, you are helping ensure that the lived experiences and priorities of the community are at the center of this process. Your voice will directly inform the Commission’s recommendations to City leaders and guide the path toward meaningful reparative action.
