Call to Action on Reducing Online Harm

Call to Action on Reducing Online Harm in Scotland

Our children and young people are suffering as a result of online harm. We need to act now.

Our Call to Action:

To secure the online safety of our children and young people, we believe we need:
  • The Scottish Government to provide leadership and support solutions to tackle online harm.
  • A national ban on the use of smartphones in schools.
  • Affordable safeguarding tools and guidance for parents and families to support safe phone use.
  • Information and support for parents and carers to delay smart phones and social media until 14 and 16 respectively.
  • To hold providers of platforms and online services to account for failings in protection in line with the Online Safety Act 2023.They must provide age verification, safety-by-design, and a rapid response to harmful content.
  • To enhance the school curriculum to include online safety, digital wellbeing, misinformation, and responsible use.
  • The inclusion of online harm and associated risks in all training for people who work with and support children and young people.
  • Funders and partners to support innovative community- led solutions to reduce online harm.
Online harm is a complex urgent issue -but it is not insurmountable. By working together Scotland can lead the way in creating a safer, digital future for our children and young people.
