Call to Action on Reducing Online Harm in Scotland

Our children and young people are suffering as a result of online harm. We need to act now.

Our Call to Action:

To secure the online safety of our children and young people, we believe we need:

The Scottish Government to provide leadership and support solutions to tackle online harm.
A national ban on the use of smartphones in schools.
Affordable safeguarding tools and guidance for parents and families to support safe phone use.
Information and support for parents and carers to delay smart phones and social media until 14 and 16 respectively.
To hold providers of platforms and online services to account for failings in protection in line with the Online Safety Act 2023.They must provide age verification, safety-by-design, and a rapid response to harmful content.
To enhance the school curriculum to include online safety, digital wellbeing, misinformation, and responsible use.
The inclusion of online harm and associated risks in all training for people who work with and support children and young people.
Funders and partners to support innovative community- led solutions to reduce online harm.

Online harm is a complex urgent issue -but it is not insurmountable. By working together Scotland can lead the way in creating a safer, digital future for our children and young people.
