Healthcare worker burnout is higher now than ever. While existing research explores factors contributing to burnout, a critical gap remains in understanding how to support recovery through the concept of respite. Respite spaces are more than just physical locations - they are essential environments that support the emotional, social, and physical well-being of staff. While often associated with break rooms or lounges, the true meaning of respite goes far deeper.
What does respite personally mean to you? Is it a quiet space to be alone, a place to connect with others, or simply a moment to breathe?
As designers, SmithGroup created this exploratory study to improve our understanding of socio-spatial design considerations for meaningful and restorative respite in a healthcare setting. Your perspective is invaluable to us. To find out more about our study click here HCW Respite Survey Information
