Project description: In partnership with the San Antonio River Authority (SARA) and San Antonio Water System (SAWS), we’re hosting a special Apple Snail Removal Service Project along the Mission Reach and Museum Reach trails.
The invasive apple snail is prolific in the San Antonio River, particularly in urban areas like the Museum Reach and downtown riverwalk, and their grazing habits are extremely detrimental to the native ecosystem. Their pink egg-casings can be found all along the river March through November, and adult snails can be seen in the river year-round. Ongoing local efforts from River Authority staff, contractors, and volunteers assist in the removal of the adult snails and their egg cases each year, with a running total of over 100,000 egg cases and 34,000 adult snails removed since 2020.
Participants will help protect the San Antonio River by removing invasive apple snails and their egg casings. Volunteers may participate on foot along the walkways or, for a limited number of participants, by kayak. Kayak availability is limited, so please indicate your interest on the registration form, and assignments will be confirmed closer to the event.
All training and materials will be provided. Registration is required, and lunch is included.
Thank you to SARA staff & SAWS for hosting this awesome volunteer event!
