Roads to Parks - Kent Street, Richmond

We're exploring opportunities for a new green open space on Kent Street, Richmond

Yarra City Council through its Open Space Strategy (YOSS) is committed to providing new open space for existing and future residents, workers and visitors to Yarra. Currently only 3% of this suburb is made up of open space and that’s why it is a high priority area to create more to cater for future population growth.

We are exploring opportunities to create a new open space for the local community at the eastern end of Kent Street, Richmond. To help make this possible, we’re looking at discontinuing a section of the road at the eastern end of Kent Street where it meets Burnley Street. The road is already closed to through traffic and we would add a safe turning area at the end of the road where it is discontinued. The proposal would involve repurposing a few car parking spots and changing parking on Davison and Burnley Streets to support school pick-up and drop-off.

Council is currently investigating what a new open space in this location could look like and want to hear from local residents to understand their ideas and whether they would be supportive.

If Council does decide to proceed with the project, there would be further engagement with the community that would include the following:   

  • A public notice for a road discontinuance   

  • Community consultation on a concept design for the new space   

    This survey is open from Monday 1 September to 5pm on Monday 22 September 2025.
