Thank you for your interest in the American Psychiatric Association (APA)'s Summer Medical Student Program (SMSP). This seven-month program, beginning in Feburary, offers current U.S. citizen medical school students at accredited U.S. medical schools a deeper dive to the exciting field of psychiatry. We do this through an eight-session speaker series on different psychiatric subspecalties, career development opportunities, mentorship, and networking opportunities, courses on leadership and a stipend for APA publishing.

If you believe yourself to be a good fit for our program, please fill out this application. The deadline for submission of this application closes on Saturday, January 10th, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. (Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time).

APA has not yet received confirmation of funding from SAMHSA/HHS for the 2025-2026 fellowship term, and there is no guarantee that after application and selection any candidate's fellowship will be funded. Fellowship award is dependent upon HHS awarding this grant for the 2025-2026 term.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. medical school. You must maintain your active enrollment status for the duration of the program.
