Stories are powerful vehicles that shed light on collective histories. They can convey personal backgrounds, shift perspectives, and uncover the ways in which our experiences shape our identities. Stories connect people.
Colorado’s documented history reveals gaps in stories that present diverse perspectives and experiences. Communities have been misrepresented, underrepresented, or not represented at all. America 250 - Colorado 150 presents a unique opportunity to uncover and highlight community voices.
Through our Portrait of Colorado at 150 Storytelling Initiative, we seek to increase representation and voices in Colorado’s documented history; equip communities with skills, tools, and training; and empower local community leaders to collect and share stories through oral history.
Together, we will co-curate at least 150 stories representing every region in our state. These invaluable contributions will add much needed knowledge to History Colorado’s permanent collection and will be highlighted in various ways to celebrate this once in a lifetime commemoration.
Join us in commemorating Colorado's 150th anniversary by participating in the Portrait of Colorado at 150 Storytelling Initiative!
