Survey to Assess International Practices in K-12 Mathematics Education and the Role of Computational Thinking, Data Science, and AI

Thank you for participating in this survey of the U.S. National Academies’ Board on International Scientific Organizations (BISO) to help us better understand your experience modernizing K-12 mathematics curriculum and/or teaching AI, data science, and computational thinking in primary and secondary education. Your perspective is valuable to get a global perspective on the topic. This survey should take about 10 minutes to complete.

Your privacy is top priority. This survey does not ask for personally identifiable information, and responses will only be reported in aggregated or summarized ways. Cross tabulations will not be performed for categories with fewer than 10 respondents. Individual survey comments shared in the final report will be fully anonymized and will not be attributable to any identifiable source. Individual responses will be destroyed after the analysis is completed. For detailed information on how your data will be handled and protected by Alchemer, see this Privacy Notice. By clicking the “Next” button, you agree to participate in this survey under these conditions. Thank you again for your time and input.

Additional background: This survey is intended to assess the status of Computational Thinking (CT), Data Science (DS), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in K-12 mathematics education.  The survey will be launched at the 9th ICMI-East Asia Regional Conference on Mathematics Education (EARCOME-9) to be held July 18–22, 2025 in Seoul, Korea.  EARCOME-9 brings researchers, educators, and policymakers from East Asian countries together for the advancement of mathematics education. The focus of this conference is The Essence of Mathematics Education in the Era of Digital Transformation. The survey will also be distributed at the International Commission on Mathematics Instruction (ICMI), which includes 90 country members; the survey will be disseminated by the ICMI newsletter among its membership.

The survey results will be used to get a global perspective and identify top performing countries in teaching these three areas. After survey analysis, interviews with experts of top performing countries will be pursued. This information will assist BISO in organizing and planning an international workshop agenda that will be held in Washington, DC, in January 2026. Alchemer and the BISO Responsible Staff Officer will analyze the data along with the Planning Committee. The aggregated results will be included in the workshop summary report.
