The Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PR/HYLI) has been around for over 30 years, helping and empowering Latino students, especially those learning English in New York City public schools. The NYC Delegation runs a free Saturday program that’s all about creating a fun and welcoming space where students can learn, celebrate, and show pride in Latino culture. The program encourages students to get involved in civic life and education, with a special focus on helping students earn the Seal of Biliteracy and giving them opportunities to practice public speaking. PR/HYLI is dedicated to social justice, preparing students for college and careers, and boosting Latino representation in politics and education.
PRHYLI has helped over 5,000 Latino students since it started, many of whom have gone on to become teachers, police officers, lawyers, judges, business owners, college staff and more. PRHYLI gives students valuable experiences that help prepare them for life after high school.
The program is split into seven groups from across New York State, including Buffalo, the Capital District, Hudson Valley, Long Island, Monroe, Western NY, and New York City. It all wraps up with an exciting three-day trip to Albany, where everyone comes together to debate 3 legislative bills in the New York State Senate Chambers, take part in youth-centered cultural and civic workshops at a College, and meet other students from around the state. The trip also celebrates the seniors who’ve won the PRHYLI scholarship with a special ceremony.

El Instituto de Liderazgo Juvenil Puertorriqueño/Hispano (PR/HYLI) lleva más de 30 años ayudando y empoderando a los estudiantes latinos, especialmente a aquellos que aprenden inglés en las escuelas públicas de la ciudad de Nueva York. La delegación de la ciudad de Nueva York ofrece un programa gratuito los sábados cuyo objetivo es crear un espacio divertido y acogedor en el que los estudiantes puedan aprender, celebrar y mostrar su orgullo por la cultura Latina. El programa anima a los estudiantes a participar en la vida cívica y la educación, con un enfoque especial en ayudarles a obtener el Sello de Alfabetización Bilingüe y darles oportunidades para practicar la oratoria. PR/HYLI se dedica a la justicia social, a preparar a los estudiantes para la universidad y las carreras profesionales, y a impulsar la representación latina en la política y la educación.
PRHYLI ha ayudado a más de 5000 estudiantes latinos desde sus inicios, muchos de los cuales se han convertido en profesores, agentes de policía, abogados, jueces, empresarios y personal universitario, y mas. PRHYLI ofrece a los estudiantes experiencias valiosas que les ayudan a prepararse para la vida después de la escuela secundaria.
El programa se divide en siete grupos de todo el estado de Nueva York, incluyendo Buffalo, el Distrito Capital, Hudson Valley, Long Island, Monroe, el oeste de Nueva York y la ciudad de Nueva York. Todo culmina con un viaje de tres días a Albany, donde todos se reúnen para debatir tres proyectos de ley en la Cámara del Senado del estado de Nueva York, participar en talleres culturales y cívicos centrados en la juventud en una universidad y conocer a otros estudiantes de todo el estado. El viaje también celebra a los estudiantes de último año que han ganado la beca PRHYLI con una ceremonia especial.
