The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking suggestions for experts to participate in the planning committee for the new workshop on Assessing Opportunities to Advance Coordination of Earth Observations and Data Stewardship. The planning committee will organize a workshop on opportunities and challenges related to ongoing coordination, collaboration, and governance of Earth observations data, with consideration of:
- the roles of various sectors in the collection and use of Earth information;
- legal, institutional, and practical considerations for effective coordination and partnerships;
- approaches to effective data sharing and to coordinating creation, curation, and operation of Earth observations and tools; and
- approaches to decisions on the collection and stewardship of Earth Observations.
The National Academies will use these suggestions to assemble a committee of approximately 8-10 volunteer experts. These suggestions will also be used to collect information for potential speakers, participants, and peer reviewers for publications resulting from the activity.
Members of the workshop planning committee will convene in weekly virtual planning meetings beginning in the second half of August 2025. This workshop will be held before the end of 2025, and is currently scheduled for the first week of December.
Candidates are sought with expertise in one or more of the following scientific areas: atmospheric sciences, ocean sciences, cryospheric sciences, geological and geophysical sciences, hydrology and freshwater systems, and ecosystems; data science, data management, governance, coordination and policy; approaches such as in-situ observations, remote sensing, applications from space, and modeling; and knowledge of federal, state, local and tribal government, private for-profit, private not-for-profit, and philanthropy sectors.
