Joint Policy Review- Call for Volunteers_2025

The AAP Section on Hematology/Oncology (SOHO) and American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO) seek participants to serve on joint pediatric hematology/oncology (PHO) policy review work groups. These groups are responsible for the review of documents and information related to PHO or where a PHO/subspecialist perspective may be beneficial.

The work groups were developed as part of an AAP-ASPHO initiative in 2013 and to date have reviewed over 300 documents.  These documents primarily include AAP policy, books and manuals and external policy, but may also include ASPHO policy/documents. The goal is to integrate the PHO expertise of the two organizations in the policy review and development process, and promote communication in order to advance a policy agenda supportive of both generalists and specialists and improved patient outcomes.

We invite new participants to join any of our eleven work groups. We are especially seeking volunteers for the groups marked below with an asterisk (*). If you have expertise or interest in any of those noted areas, your participation would be particularly valuable.
  • Coagulation disorders*
  • Hemoglobinopathies*
  • Other Non-malignant hematology*
  • Leukemia/lymphomas/lymphoproliferative disorders
  • Solid tumors
  • Stem cell transplantation and Gene Therapy*
  • Transfusion medicine
  • Neuro-oncology*
  • Oncology supportive care*
  • Health care delivery and health policy*

Responsibilities and Requirements for Reviewers:
  • To review the draft policy by the established “review by” date.  Groups are typically provided 2-4 weeks to submit the review feedback. However, there are some instances in which policy may be expedited and a shorter time frame may be required.
  • Provide comments for the author’s consideration in the format requested. Comments should be based on established PHO policy and relevant clinical guidelines, where available.  Inclusion of references to support comments is encouraged.
  • To represent the PHO community in the document/policy review process.
In order to participate, work group volunteers must be a member of both AAP/SOHO and ASPHO, and be board certified or board eligible in pediatric hematology/oncology. As a way to broaden volunteer opportunities, participants will typically serve on one work group. The term of service is one, three-year term with the option for  an additional term/s.

SOHO and ASPHO leadership are committed to increasing member representation of underrepresented groups in medicine that includes participation in the review groups. Diverse candidates in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, national origin, career stage, institutional/practice size and location of practice are encouraged to submit a nomination.
