IFLA Advisory Committee on Standards Expert Advisor - Copyeditor

The Role

Are you passionate about writing, editing, details, and supporting the library and information field to communicate its standards materials effectively? We’re looking for a talented Volunteer Copyeditor to join the IFLA Advisory Committee on Standards (CoS) as an expert advisor (volunteer position).

Each IFLA Standard reflects consensus on up-to-date principles, guidelines and best practice, a particular library or information-related activity or service. Standards are developed by IFLA’s Professional committees, Regional Divisions, Advisory Committees and Review Groups, often in collaboration with other international organisations. 
As a CoS Expert Advisor – Copyeditor, you’ll play an important role in ensuring our Standards materials are polished, professional and accessible. This is a great opportunity to use your skills to make a meaningful impact on the library and information field while expanding your editing portfolio and networking with like-minded individuals.

What You’ll Do
  • Review and edit written standards documents
  • Ensure consistency with our style guide
  • Work collaboratively with authors to enhance clarity, grammar, and readability
  • Attend Committee on Standards Meetings, occurring approximately once per quarter
  • Update the Committee on Standards on the progress of Standards under edit
What We’re Looking For
  • Strong command of British English grammar, syntax, and punctuation
  • Competency in Microsoft Word 
  • Experience with copyediting, proofreading, or writing (professional or volunteer)
  • Deep familiarity with style and formatting guides, especially APA, MLA and Chicago
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
  • Accessibility Compliance
  • Broad familiarity with the Library and Information field and its terminology
  • Commitment to IFLA’s mission and values

Time Commitment
  • We estimate 3–5 hours per month, depending on project needs. This volunteer position is fully remote and flexible.
  • Expert Advisor – Copy editors are appointed for 2-year terms, renewable.
