Calling for Speakers!
The Mountaineers is Washington’s oldest outdoor education and recreation nonprofit. Founded in 1906 as a climbing organization, The Mountaineers has grown into an outdoor community with over 16,000 members. We offer hundreds of activities each month - all led by a crew of around 3,000 volunteers - to teach just about every outdoor recreation activity!
The Mountaineers hopes to inspire the ongoing growth of our programs and volunteer leaders and instructors through our professional development programming, the Leadership Development Series. Consisting of one-to-two-hour virtual seminar presentations from October to April. The Leadership Development Series will explore the many facets of leadership: Mental Health, Equity & Inclusion, Risk Management, Group Facilitation & Instruction, and Conservation & Advocacy.
Calling for Speakers and Presentation Proposals! We are seeking professionals who can remotely present on some aspect of leadership and instruction, either technical in nature or focused on "soft skills" involved with outdoor leadership and instruction.
The primary audience of our Leadership Development Series is our current volunteer trip leaders and course instructors, and aspiring volunteers. Each year, the series brings together hundreds of volunteers from across our seven branches in Washington state. Our goal is to provide a diverse range of leadership presentations tailored to our dedicated volunteers, who already possess technical expertise in their respective outdoor fields but are eager to expand their leadership skills. The Leadership Development Series enables them to develop deeper, broader skill sets through a wider network of outdoors community and resources. After attending these sessions, volunteers will emerge better equipped to lead trips that prioritize psychological safety, facilitate impactful discussions, integrate inclusive language into their activities, and much more.
Our volunteers are the backbone of our organization, volunteering their time to teach courses and lead activities into the great outdoors for all of our members. The ultimate goal of the Leadership Development Series is to provide our volunteers with the tools to be better leaders and instructors - and also to thank them for everything that they do.
We provide stipends starting at $100 for these remote presentations. Please contact Vienna Christensen at viennac@mountaineers.org. to discuss compensation in detail.
