Moonee Valley City Council has commissioned an exciting new artwork. The First Nations Art Commission is being delivered as part of the Playground Project, a trailblazing international exhibition connecting society through art and design and making its southern hemisphere debut at Incinerator Gallery in Melbourne from 28 June to 12 October 2025.
The artwork is being commissioned as part of the Community Recovery program in response to the 2022 Maribyrnong Flood. It will serve as a lasting acknowledgment of the flood’s impact on the area. This commission is supported by the Victorian Government and the Commonwealth Government through the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
Please note that the community cannot influence the specific location of the artwork or the design of the artwork itself.
After the Playground Project exhibition, the artwork will be permanently installed beside the Maribyrnong River in 2026. However, we’d love to hear your ideas about the surrounding elements—such as landscaping, interpretive signage, and other experiences that could enhance the site. Specifically, we’re interested in your thoughts on:
- What the landscaping should look like
- What type of signage is appropriate
- How the story of the flood should be acknowledged
- Any activities or experiences that could be incorporated into the site
