Computing Breakthroughs Call for Input

The Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine seeks your input for a new study on Computing Breakthroughs and Innovation Patterns sponsored by the National Science Foundation.   The overall goal of phase 1 of the study is to identify a representative set of approximately 20 breakthroughs that reflect the broad outcomes of federal research and education investments in computing. These should span work supported by the NSF, other members of the federal Networking and Information Technology R&D program, and industry and should reflect breakthroughs since the NSF’s Computer and Information Science and Engineering directorate was established in 1986. The list is not intended to be a definitive “top 20,” but rather a set of illustrative examples showing the value of past investments.

These breakthroughs should highlight achievements across the full range of computing that have had significant economic, scientific, or societal impacts. Breakthroughs may include both technical and sociotechnical results and can represent either ideas or artifacts (such as software or testbeds).

Please help us provide as rich a set of breakthroughs as possible by providing the information requested below.
