DMNS IRB Protocol Submission

Thank you for submitting a protocol to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science Institutional Review Board, IRB00014647.

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science is guided by the ethical principles for research involving human subjects stated in the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research report entitled “Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research” (the Belmont Report) [See Section IV. List of authorities]. DMNS specifically recognizes the Belmont Report principles of respect for persons, beneficence (including minimization of harms and maximization of benefits), and justice and applies these principles in all research reviewed by the Institutional Review Board.

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science IRB limits the scope of research accepted for review to the following circumstances:

All new DMNS studies that meet the federal definition of research require DMNS IRB approval regardless of funding source. DMNS’s surveys that are conducted as part of normal education practices in Museum settings are not research [See Section II.B]. The IRB will review all studies submitted by DMNS staff.
DMNS staff engaged in cooperative research that has been or will be reviewed by another IRB must submit an application to the DMNS IRB for review. In the application, the PI may request that the DMNS IRB defer review to the other IRB involved.
Upon request and as resources allow, the IRB will review research projects conducted by an agency or organization with close links to DMNS (e.g., another science museum, local cultural institution) that does not have another IRB available.

Projects not affiliated with DMNS or its closely related partners are out of the IRB’s scope and will not be accepted for review.
