Thank you for taking the time to review the updated Washington State K-12 Learning Standards for Mathematics. Learning standards are the goals for instruction, and identify what all students should know, understand, and be able to do by the end of each grade level.
In Washington, learning standards are reviewed and revised in partnership with classroom teachers, school and district administrators, business and labor representatives, educational service districts, and professional organizations and advisory committees. A list of expert groups can be found at
Washington Learning Standards Review and Revision Engagement. After public review, standards are initially adopted at the state level by the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Once initially adopted, educators are provided access to professional learning and implementation resources. As educators start to use the initial standards, this feedback survey is available to collect their impressions and suggestions. The information collected here will inform the final version of the standards to be adopted by the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Then, schools begin teaching and evaluating student learning in alignment with the newly adopted learning standards.
In Washington, classroom instruction and student learning are supported at both the state and local levels. The curriculum and instructional materials used in a school district to support student learning are adopted at the local level. Curriculum and instructional materials may include textbooks, equipment, worksheets, and other materials used to create a comprehensive learning experience for each student. Local school boards select and adopt curriculum and instructional materials for their local schools based on school district policy and procedures, and in alignment with the state learning standards.
