Learn more about the activity here

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking suggestions for experts to update the 2022 report, A Research Strategy for Ocean-Based Carbon Dioxide Removal and Sequestration.  The experts will serve on a new standing committee charged with providing trusted, vetted, and transparent information on the state-of-science and priorities for mCDR research.

National Academies staff will assemble a committee of approximately 18-20 volunteer experts. Within the context of mCDR (including specific approaches; the ocean carbon cycle; measuring, reporting and validation (MRV) of carbon removal and environmental impact; techno-economic analysis; and of mCDR issues related to governance, social acceptance, and environmental democracy), we seek expertise in the following areas:

  • biological oceanography
  • physical oceanography
  • chemical oceanography
  • biogeochemistry
  • fisheries science
  • chemical engineering
  • coastal engineering
  • industrial engineering
  • economics and techno-economics
  • sociology and
  • policy

The National Academies value a wide range of perspectives to strengthen the quality of our work. We carefully consider alternative viewpoints when formulating advice, convening experts with differing experience and perspectives, providing oversight, and conducting all other activities, and strive to foster an environment where all can participate fully. We welcome your suggestions for a broad range of experts to work with us.

We invite you to submit your suggestions by March 18, 2025 AT 11:59 PM.
