Help shape Melbourne's West!

As we move closer to completing the West Gate Tunnel Project by end 2025, we're inviting all Victorians to submit name ideas for the twin tunnels that are set to transform travel in Melbourne's west.

We're seeking names inspired by local landmarks, past icons of the western suburbs or cultural connections.

You can either suggest a name for one or both of the tunnels.

Each person who submits a name idea will go into the draw to win a $500 Shell Gift Card. The winner will also have the opportunity to nominate a community organisation or registered charity to receive a $2,500 donation.

Entries will be assessed in line with our selection criteria (see below).

Selection criteria
Entries must comply with Geographic Names Victoria criteria including to:

be relevant to the local area and community and not be used for another feature in Victoria;
not be discriminatory;
avoid using names of living people (deceased for longer than 5 years);
avoid commercial and/or business names;
be written in English or recognised format of an Aboriginal language;
be easy to pronounce, spell and write and must not exceed three words;
avoid using directions in names i.e. north, south, east and west; and
only use the surname of a person who is being commemorated and initials should not be used.

Female name submissions are encouraged to reflect the Victorian Government’s commitment to ensure 70 per cent of all new commemorative place names are named after women as part of its Gender Equality Strategy and Action Plan 2023–2027.

Major Road Projects Victoria (incorporating Big Build Roads, West Gate Tunnel Project and North East Link)

VIDA collects your personal information to carry out its functions and activities, including in relation to the prize draw for eligible tunnel naming submissions, to confirm that you are eligible to participate, to evaluate your entry and to ensure you are able to be contacted if required. Ordinarily, we only collect your sensitive information or health information if you consent to the collection. However, in limited situations, we do not need your consent, such as if the collection is required or authorised under law.
