The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking suggestions for experts to participate in developing an updated edition of On Being a Scientist: An Updated and Online Guide to the Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research. This new version will update and expand on the 2009 edition to reflect changes in the current national and international research enterprise relevant to the conduct of research and to address professional conduct that limits or harms research talent and research advancement.   At this initial stage of the project,  National Academies staff are looking for suggestions to build a committee of approximately 10-12 volunteer experts that will lead the overall revision of the guide, in addition to collecting information for potential speakers, participants, and peer reviewers for the publication resulting from the activity. Later in the project National Academies staff will seek additional suggestions for experts to serve on panels that will expand and develop new content on specific topic areas to be added to the guide.

Based on the Statement of Task, staff are currently looking for expertise particularly in the following areas:

  • Current researcher in science, engineering, medicine, or public health, especially researchers at the early career stage or those who have extensively mentored early career researchers
  • Research ethics and the responsible conduct of research
  • Ethical, legal, and social implications of research
  • Research administration and compliance
  • Conducting international research and/or team science
  • Addressing and preventing professional conduct that limits or harms research talent and researchers' advancement
  • Effective advising and mentoring practices
  • Education science and research

Nominations for the topic-specific panels will be requested later in the project.
