Trip Agreement - 2025 East Greenland Global Adventure

3. Preparedness: I understand that this trip requires good aerobic conditioning, balance, and the skills and gear to backpack up to 10 miles and 2000' gain per day for 13 days in a row. I understand that participants will carry all required backpacking gear (shared 2-person 4-season tent, shared stove/cookware, shared polar bear flares, mug/spoon, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, clothing, batteries, toiletries, 10 essentials) and up to 7 days of food/fuel.

4. Route: This outing is VERY STRENUOUS, and the ENTIRE ROUTE IS OFF-TRAIL. Participants must have experience and confidence backpacking on steep, rocky terrain including ascents, descents, and traverses of steep scree/talus slopes, boulders, rock slabs, and narrow paths. Some areas will have moderate exposure, and low-consequence snowfield crossings may be required. One low-angle, snow-free, 0.5 mile glacier traverse will be required. Multiple swift water crossings of frigid glacier runoff where we lock arms and cross together for safety will be required (examples of actual stream crossings from the region: Video 1, Video 2). Steep ascents and descents on boulders and rock slabs will require the ability to take tall, extended steps up/down while using hands for stability. All while carrying a fully-loaded backpack.

5. Boats: I understand that we will be traveling in small, high-speed boats in fjords and open ocean, and that we will be transferring between boat and rocky, slippery shorelines without the use of docks or gangways while the boat is rocking up and down and side to side, and possibly by walking in knee-deep ocean water.

6. Polar Bears: I understand that polar bears are native to Greenland, and I commit to adhering to and sharing responsibility for the polar bear mitigation strategies recommended by our professional guide. These can include:

multiple warning flares will be carried by the group (first line of defense)
the guide will carry a rifle (second line of defense)
participants will be expected to use the latrine in groups (with one person serving as lookout)
every participant will be expected to serve a 1-hour overnight shift sometime between 10pm and 6am every night to watch for polar bears.

Accommodations: I understand that the lodgings on this trip include (i) 2-person single-gender tents in wild camps without established privies or bathrooms and (ii) hostels, huts, and guesthouses with large, 6+ person, mixed-gender, dormitory-style bunk rooms and central, shared bathrooms. The hostels, huts, and/or guesthouses – as well as the bunk rooms and bathrooms at those locations – may be shared with other mixed-gender trekking parties. *This question is required.

8. Food: I understand that the variety of food available and the ability to meet special dietary preferences may be limited. I understand that the food supplied by our outfitter may not be the brands, flavors, meals, or portion sizes that I prefer. *This question is required.

9. Travel Documents: I understand that I will be required to hold up-to-date travel documents, international medical insurance, and emergency evacuation insurance for the trip, at my own expense. The evacuation insurance should be sufficient to get me back to the hospital of my choice in the United States. *This question is required.

10. Teamwork: I understand that this is a group trip and that participants will look out for and support each other during the trek. Pace, daily start-end times, route and side trips will be driven by the needs of the group and conditions in the field. *This question is required.

11. Leadership: I understand that safety and well-being of participants comes first and the itinerary and route may change without prior notice based on conditions. While participant input will be valued, the Mountaineers trip leader will be the ultimate decision maker. *This question is required.

12. Responsibility: I understand that the Mountaineers trip leaders are not guides and that I am responsible for knowing the route and where I am along the way at all times. *This question is required.

13. Fitness and Medical Conditions: I commit to providing a doctor’s certification of medical fitness if requested, and to disclose to the leader and outfitter in advance of the trip about any recent injuries, surgeries, allergies, medications or medical conditions that could impact me on the trip. *This question is required.

14. Behavior: I commit to behave during the trip in a careful and safe manner, to communicate to the leader promptly about any illness or injury, and to put my health and safety and that of my fellow group members first even if this means having to turn around or exit the trip early. *This question is required.

Cancellation Policy: I understand that if I cancel 90 or more days before the August 9th arrival date, I may receive a refund less a $1000 cancellation fee and any other non-refundable expenses incurred up to that time. And if I cancel less than 90 days before the August 9th arrival date, no refund is available. NOTE: the cancellation fees above may be waived other than a minimum $100 admin fee if someone can be found to take your place on the trip.
