The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking suggestions for experts to be considered for the membership rotation or other engagement with the Committee on Solid Earth Geophysics. Using these suggestions, National Academies staff will be looking to add up to 5 volunteer experts in addition to collecting information for potential speakers, participants, future membership rotations, and other forms of engagement. Self-nominations are welcome and U.S. citizenship or residence are not required.
The committee serves as a focal point for community discussion and community-agency interaction on issues related to the structure, dynamics, and evolution of the Earth. The committee meets twice a year in person to discuss and showcase new and emerging questions in geophysics, highlight recent advances, explore topics of societal relevance, and meet with agency representatives. The committee also and holds monthly calls to plan meetings and other events and discuss prescient topics in geophysics. Committee members serve 3-year terms and may be asked to serve a second term.
Based on the Statement of Task and the continuing membership of the committee, staff are looking for expertise in the fields surrounding solid earth geophysics, including but not limited to:
- Exploration geophysics
- Geochemistry
- Geodesy
- Geodynamics
- Natural hazards
- Near-surface geophysics
- Mineral physics
