About Women Leading on Climate
Addressing the need for increased women's leadership in climate action, the Women Leading on Climate network is harnessing the collective power of a global community of women leaders. Launched during New York Climate Week in September 2024, this initiative unites a coalition of influential women, led by Catherine McKenna, María Mendiluce, Ana Toni, Patricia Espinosa, and Jennifer Morgan, to foster collaboration, uplift emerging leaders, and drive transformative change.

About the letter
The below advocacy letter is coordinated by the Women Leading on Climate initiative co-founded by Climate & Nature Solutions and We Mean Business Coalition.

It focuses on how this influential group can better drive momentum towards an ambitious outcome at COP29 and beyond via targeted climate advocacy on stronger national climate plans.

We are a global network of women climate leaders committed to rapidly accelerate progress on reducing the carbon pollution that is overheating our planet.

As leaders from business, politics and civil society, we are calling for ambitious, immediate climate action - in negotiation rooms, boardrooms, in local communities and in the streets.

And we are working to rally women throughout the world to deliver a clear message to governments everywhere. 80% of people now support faster action on climate, yet it is women that can really make the difference in mobilising action. Research shows they are twice as likely to speak out and engage their community on the issue of climate.

Rooted in our commitment and responsibility to protect our shared planet and our communities we expect every government, by 2025, to:
  • Increase ambition. Deliver climate plans (NDCs), addressing all emissions and accelerating action, consistent with the promise to limit global heating to 1.5°C made to future generations in the Paris Agreement.
  • Take action. Get moving on promises to address the number one cause of climate change, burning fossil fuels.
    • Triple renewables; double energy efficiency and ultimately phase out fossil fuels whilst ensuring a just transition for workers and communities.
    • Halt and reverse deforestation whilst incentivizing investments in nature.
  • Mobilize finance. Seize the economic opportunities of the moment through:
    • Public budgets that address the scale of the climate crisis.
    • Catalytic public climate finance to attract private investment, especially in the Global South.
    • Fast-tracked policies that eliminate barriers to green investment and remove fossil fuel subsidies.
We know that the impacts of climate change disproportionately affect women and girls. By delivering on these priorities and working together we can secure a safer, more secure and prosperous future for people, communities and planet.
