Welcome! Your Voice Matters – Help Shape the Future of the CEM® Certification!
IAEM leadership is conducting a critical evaluation of the education requirement for the Certified Emergency Manager (CEM®) certification, and we need your input!
Background Information
When the CEM was created in 1993, the Professional Standards Advisory Council, made up of subject matter experts (SMEs), set requirements based on a job task analysis. While aiming to add an education requirement to elevate the profession, the SMEs acknowledged emergency management was an evolving profession and built-in flexibility – allowing work experience to substitute for a degree – to accommodate those whose career paths didn’t include formal education. From 2010 to 2012, IAEM implemented varying education requirements based on geographic factors. IAEM is now reviewing this requirement, using member feedback, and may revise the education requirement if it is deemed outdated.
