NYS Universal Navigation Intake Form

Please review the FAQs below for quick answers to your questions. If you have a question not answered here, the request form is at the bottom of the page.
Where should the Universal Navigation (UNav) be deployed?
The UNav should be implemented on all public-facing New York State websites and web applications. The updated Universal Navigation policy (link pending) requires sites to be on a .ny.gov domain and use HTTPS to deploy the UNav. Intranets and internal applications are not currently required to use the UNav.
What do I need to do before the new UNav is launched?
If your site uses the script embed version of the UNav (most sites do), you won’t need to do anything. The UNav at the top of your site will automatically update when the new version is launched.

If your site uses the iframe version of the UNav (not common), you’ll need to switch to the script embed, as the iframe will be deprecated by the end of the year.

If your site has a recreated version of the UNav, you’ll need to switch to the embedded script version. If for some reason you are unable to use the embedded script version (e.g., your platform does not support script embeds), you can request an exception via our intake form (below).
How can I tell what version of the UNav my site is using?
You can easily check which version your site is using by entering your site’s URL into our UNav Detector tool: https://unav-check.ny.gov. This tool will tell you the version your site is currently using and what, if any, updates are needed.
What if my website is not on ny.gov or doesn't use HTTPS?
Exceptions to the policy are rare but may be granted in specific circumstances. If your site cannot transition to a .ny.gov domain, please submit a request through our intake form (below).
How do I switch to the new translation menu (language switcher)?
The updated UNav has been designed to work with existing setups. That means that, by default, the new translation menu is turned off to avoid multiple dropdowns appearing on sites using the old language switcher.

Enabling the new translation selector requires removing the old language switcher and a small code change. For detailed instructions, please refer to our technical FAQ: Updated UNav Repository

If you need further assistance, feel free to reach out via our intake form (below).
Do I need to use search?
The search field in the updated UNav works like the current one: it searches within the context of the site you’re currently on. For example, if you search for something while on an its.ny.gov page, the results displayed would come from that site. The search results page also gives users the option to expand their search to include results from all NY state sites.

While the search field is useful for residents, it’s not mandatory. Sites using the UNav have the option to hide the search field if they prefer to implement their own search functionality somewhere else on the page.

If you decide to hide the search field, please refer to the technical FAQ: Updated UNav Repository
How does the CTA in the updated UNav footer differ from the CTAs on my site?
Many agency sites include prominent CTA (Call to Action) buttons in the footer, like “Register to Vote,” “Vaccinate NY,” or “Donate Life.” These are important messages that encourage residents to take action.

The updated UNav footer has a built-in CTA that can be easily updated across all sites. This ensures consistency and keeps CTAs current and consistent without requiring manual updates on your end. You can remove the manually embedded CTAs in favor of the dynamic one provided by the updated UNav.
Something is broken with the new UNav… what should I do?
If you believe you’ve found a technical issue with the new UNav, first check the scope of the issue:

- Affects everyone: The issue is happening on all sites using the UNav;
- Affects just your site (or group of sites): The issue seems to be specific to your site or a group of similar sites and might be related to your site’s setup.

If it’s only affecting your site, you may want to check if the problem is related to your site’s setup or reach out to your technical partners for guidance. If it affects everyone, please report it as a “Technical Issue” through our intake form (below).
Where can I see a demo?
You can see a demo of the updated UNav by visiting our staging site.

⚠️ Warning: The code is still in development and may have bugs, but the demo should give you a good sense of the new look and feel and how the navigation will function on your site, which can help you prepare for the upcoming changes.
